How to Care for Wood or Laminate Flooring

Updated: Oct 25, 2018

In order to keep your hardwood or laminate floors looking new, follow these basic tips for proper care and cleaning.

Regular Maintenance Tips and Guidelines:

  • As soon as a spill occurs, blot up with a damp cloth, not allowing the spill to stand on the floor.

  • Vacuum or sweep your floors regularly. When vacuuming, use a brush or felt hard floor attachment, rather than the beater bar, which can cause scratches or dull your floor’s finish.

  • Do not mop or wash hardwood or laminate floors with water, soap, ammoniated, chlorinated, or any liquid material. These liquids can cause your floor to warp or swell.

  • Use nail polish remover on a white cloth to remove paint, markers, ink, shoe polish, or nail polish. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth after to clean up any remaining residue.

  • Do not use a polishing or buffing machine on your wood or laminate flooring.

  • For chewing gum or candle wax, harden the spot with a bag of ice, then scrape the gum or wax off with a plastic scraper and wipe with a damp cloth.
